Whether you'll watch the new series or not, Anne of ‘Green Gables’ is worth revisiting

She is, when we first meet her, a girl “of about eleven, garbed in a very short, very tight, very ugly dress of yellowish gray wincey. She wore a faded brown sailor hat and beneath the hat, extending down her back, were two braids of very thick, decidedly red hair. Her face was small, white and thin, also much freckled; her mouth was large and so were her eyes, that looked green in some lights and moods and gray in others.”

'The Radium Girls’ tells of the women whose deaths revolutionized the workplace

The young women sat in rows, heads bent, painting numbers on paper watch and clock faces with luminous paint. The numbers on the wristwatches and clock dials were so tiny, the workers needed a very fine brush to complete their work. So the painters did just as their bosses showed them, and pinched the bristles between their lips or teeth to get a superfine point for painting each number.

Dinosaurs - and Michael Crichton - roar again in 'Dragon Teeth'

As if extracted from amber, a new story has been reanimated from the fossilized brain of Michael Crichton. Recently "discovered" in the late author's archives (Crichton died in 2008), "Dragon Teeth" is a light historical novel that bears all the narrative traits of its techno-thriller ancestor, "Jurassic Park." It's a fun and diverting romp through the Old West in search of dinosaur bones.

Police surrounded Confederate statue base while protesters called for prison reform

During a protest organized by Alerta Migratoria and Inside Outside Alliance, police and their barricades surrounded the base of the former Confederate statue outside the old Durham County Courthouse during a county commissioners meeting on Monday . Protesters were demanding the commissioners call on the Sheriff to testify under oath about collaboration with ICE, protest in-person visitation, and investigate the deaths in the Durham County jail. Several members joined the meeting inside and sang to the commissioners.
